The R.I.B.A.launched an architectural competition for the refurbishment and extension of a film and creative arts centre located in the southern area of the city of Sheffield. The proposed design directly responds to site conditions taking the form of a building with a solid elevation housing service accommodation on the east side and a contrasting fully glazed elevation on the west side addressing the more public aspect of both the site and the brief. The symbolic use of stainless steel cladding to the framed structure provides a strong identity for Sheffield with a visible presence day and night. Internally the accommodation is split over four levels with the Main Auditorium on the top floor above the Mediatheque with it’s viewing ‘pods’ suspended at mezzanine level adding sculptural form and drama to the double height Entrance Foyer which ‘floats’ above a street level Café. In addition to providing ramped and lift access a sense of occasion on entering the building is achieved by the inclusion of a wide stepped approach to the main entrance.
